The Act of Writing

Filed under: writing techniques — freethepen @ 1:43 pm

Janhawaii2015 Wherever I go I take my journal and when I can find a second I sit and write. The act of writing is a way to meditate on your experience in the moment. It is a way to resolve the past. It is a way to dream of the future. Best of all it is a way to get to know the self that lives within you. All this and more can be accomplished through the use of your pen, not the computer, but the pen. The process is not the same. The pen vs. the computer use different parts of the brain.

When you write, write without stopping, no censorship, nor editing. Let the self speak. Let the mind have its space to move around on the page. Write and watch the mind unfold.

Take a deep breath. Pick up your pen and start with where you are in this moment, this very moment. Breathe in and out and in and out and let thoughts show up on the page. This might take some practice but if you are not writing, you are in the way. Get out of the way and let whatever thoughts you have right now show up on the page. Now, keep going.

Have You Had Enough?

Filed under: writing and healing — freethepen @ 2:39 pm

bigstock-Vogue-style-vintage-portrait-35629610 We have our personal lives, community lives, national lives. There is so much going on in many areas of our lives right now that it is difficult to manage it all. Write out your stressors and what you would like to do about them. Who can help you with these burdens? Who needs to hear your voice on your point of view? Make a list, write letters, take action, take time to take care of yourself. How are you going to do this?

If you want to write fiction on this topic, develop a character who is drowning in stress. Write her out of it.

KODAK Digital Still Camera I’ve heard that in certain spiritual practices bowls should never be empty. If they aren’t filled with fruit or other food items, they should be filled with blessings for others. What would you put in this bowl? What would it mean to put those items in the bowl? Are there certain intentions you would be utilizing?

Wild Writing

Filed under: writing techniques — freethepen @ 12:59 pm

babywithbook Take your favorite book whether poetry, fiction, non-fiction or any other genre and find a sentence that makes you think, feel, or experience. Write that sentence on a clean page. If it reminds you of something you lived continue the sentence into a piece of your own. If the sentence makes your imagination run wild, write out scenes you are imagining.

KODAK Digital Still Camera Don’t we love surprises? When was the last time someone surprised you with flowers? How did it feel? Who was it? What flowers were sent? Was it a holiday or for no particular reason? Write out the experience in all its details.

If you have never received flowers as a surprise, did you send flowers to surprise someone? If you haven’t done that either, then who would you like to receive flowers from or who would you like to send them to?

Moonlit night

Filed under: Uncategorized — freethepen @ 1:06 pm

KODAK Digital Still Camera Okay, so I’m not a good photographer. Even so, you can see the power of the moon coming up on a quiet evening. The stillness is soul food. The moon is a reminder that nature is powerful and the universe is magnificent. I love staring into the full moon. It cleanses me of my day. It restores me like a prayer.

When I lived in Ca. I would often slip out of the house in the middle of the night and drive a mile to the ocean to watch the full moon slink across tiny waves touching the shore. That scene gave me the most inner satisfaction of peace I had ever known. It took me away from working and going to school full time, it took me away from an emotionally abusive boyfriend, it took me away from it all.

Write about your experience of a full moon. Write it all.

Kids with chef hats preparing the cake dough - mixing ingredient Have you ever made bread? I must say that bread baking in your kitchen makes your entire house smell like love. If you haven’t made bread, have you ever bought bread from a bakery warm out of the oven? In Brooklyn, when I was young, my father and I would go to the German deli and buy bread hot out of the oven then wait for the bread to be put into a large machine and sliced. All the way home the car would smell so divine we could hardly wait to get home to eat it and slather it with butter.

Write your stories about bread. Write every detail. Remember the joy of it all.

KODAK Digital Still Camera The best way to start a day is to sit down with a journal and pen and write what is on your mind. What does the morning feel like? Is there something you are taking with you into today from yesterday that you would like to resolve or release? Is there something you desire to do today for your well-being or to help another? Is there a childhood memory that has been coming to mind lately? Releasing these thoughts, wishes, feelings is a spiritual cleansing.

Write — write it all out — keep going until you are spent. Then, take a pencil and circle all the words or phrases that would allow you to drop deeper and write a piece starting with each word or phrase circled. Keep going until you are through. This is a fabulous cleansing ritual.

Only Yesterday

Filed under: memoir — freethepen @ 5:52 pm

bachelor76 It seemed only yesterday I stood with diploma in hand from UCSC with a heart full of hope and a desire ready to take action. With many of my plans fulfilled and completed and my desires satisfied I have to laugh, my life still didn’t turn out the way I expected.

What about your ‘only yesterdays’?
